Fun fact: Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball. The sport was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor, as an indoor game to keep his students active during the winter. The first games were played using a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals. The baskets retained their bottoms, so every time a point was scored, someone had to climb a ladder to retrieve the ball. It wasn't until later that the bottoms were removed from the baskets, evolving into the open-hoop design we see today.
